Useful copy about Bicycle Island and the Pear Izumi Sweetspot Race this year
The Isle of Wight is excitingly diverse; with spectacular scenery and coastlines, characterful towns and quaint villages, and more sunshine hours than anywhere else in the UK. Once known exclusively for its traditional seaside resorts and award-winning beaches, the “Diamond Isle” is fast emerging as one of the UK’s key destinations for festivals, outdoor adventures and a flourishing local food scene.
There are attractions aplenty to be found across the Island, ranging from adventure parks and historic sites, to animal encounters and colourful carnivals. With miles of footpaths, cycleways and coastline to explore there is an almost endless scope of “things to do”. The Isle of Wight’s contrasting landscapes are the perfect playground for a wide range of outdoor adventure activities, whilst the surrounding seas provide ideal conditions for watersports enthusiasts. Particular attention was recently brought to the Island’s range of cycling experiences, as Lonely Planet crowned the “Bicycle Island” as one of the world’s top ten cycle routes. Don’t go home without riding the “Round the Island Cycle Route”, a stunning 66 mile waymarked ride around the islands quietest country lanes, through picturesque villages. Whether you “Knock it off” in two days or savour it over four at an easy pace, it’s simply not to be missed!
Whilst the Island’s microclimate usually offers some of the best beach weather in the UK, it also provides a unique growing climate for some fantastic local produce. Famed for exports from The Garlic Farm, Tomato Stall and Isle of Wight Cheese Company the Island also has a fabulous offering of freshly caught seafood – including our “national dish” of Crab on Chips! There are a large variety of places to eat serving menus filled with these local delights.
With such a long-standing history as a holiday destination the Island is home to some fantastic places to stay. Self-catering cottages, luxury hotels and welcoming B&B’s, eco-friendly lodges and yurts and family-friendly holiday parks and campsites are all available to suit any budget and requirements. If you’re bringing a bike stay in “cyclist welcome” accommodation and have your bags moved on ahead of you, so you can concentrate on the stunning coastal views and great cycling, all the way around the island.
The Isle of Wight Tour Series will take place in the resort town of Ryde, on the north-east coast. Often referred to as the “gateway to the Island”, Ryde still boasts much of its original Victorian architecture, and is fronted by the oldest seaside pier in England and several miles of expansive golden sandy beaches.
Getting to the Island couldn’t be easier. We are less than 2 and half hours journey from London via train and passenger ferry, with a choice of 3 locations (Porstmouth, Southampton & Lymington) to cross the Solent from if you are bringing a vehicle.
