Tour of Britain final stage – Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight will host the final stage of the UK’s most prestigious cycle race, the Tour of Britain. It will be the first time the iconic race would have ever been hosted on the Island and the event will offer an amazing sporting spectacle for visitors and locals alike, seeing 19 of the world’s top teams and 100 pro riders race across the Island’s varied and picturesque landscape.
The Island leg of the race – stage 8 – takes place on Sunday 11th September and starts in Ryde and finishes with an arduous climb to the Needles Old Battery. The race spans 150km and passes through a wide range of the Island’s towns and villages; from Ryde the race will pass through the main towns of Bembridge, Sandown, Rookley, Shorwell, Mottistone, Freshwater, Yarmouth, Shalfleet, Cowes, Newport, Godshill, Shanklin, Ventnor, Niton to finish at The Needles.
There are plenty of opportunities for local businesses, accommodation providers and hospitality outlets to get involved, both on the day and in the build-up to this special sporting event. We will share more information in the coming weeks.
Get your Cyclist Friendly ‘wheel’ of approval!
With over 200 miles of cycle tracks, byways, and bridleways the Isle of Wight is already one of the top cycling destinations in the UK and attracts an abundance of cyclists every year. We anticipate the Island’s Tour of Britain stage in September will draw even more bike riding enthusiasts to the Island – pre and post event – looking to take on the epic route and explore the Isle of Wight on two wheels.
We want to know what cycling friendly facilities your business already has in place or are planning to have ready for the race to achieve Visit Isle Of Wight’s CYCLIST WELCOME ‘Wheel of approval’.
Here are a few ways your business can become more cyclist friendly:
- Provide information on how to travel to your premises by bike or sustainable transport
- Safe storage for bikes – this could be a designated or purpose-built storage shed or garage
- Information on the nearest bike shops (for repairs and spare parts etc.)
- Bike washing facilities
- Kit washing and drying facilities
- Provide a basic tool kit available for riders (including a pump and puncture repair kits)
Contact us at email@example.com share what you already have in place.
To help you get even more on track pre-event we will be distributing more tips and a Tour of Britain event ‘build up pack’ over the next couple of months.
