Tourism businesses take advantage of new look green travel scheme
Visit Isle of Wight’s scheme to promote sustainable travel for visitors was relaunched this week.
The Green Star programme launched in 2016, and now organisers are hoping even more Island businesses will take advantage of the scheme.
The revised Green Star scheme has three levels of membership – bronze, silver and gold. Just a few steps can get a tourism business on the path to being given Green Star accreditation – from being aware of sustainable travel options, to providing electric charging points for cars and bikes.
The scheme forms part of a wider programme in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council and the Department of Transport.
The Island’s Monkey Haven hosted the event on Tuesday, giving businesses who attended an opportunity to take a look around the multi-award winning attraction.
Justine Frankis, from the Inglewood Guesthouse in Sandown has been part of the scheme since it launched:
‘Customers appreciate the fact there is availability of public transport and methods of getting around without using your car.
‘The relaunched scheme means you are given the incentive to achieve a little more because there are different grades and if there is something you can’t do at the moment, you are encouraged to take it on.’
Justine’s husband Jonathan added:
‘It is a brilliant scheme and we had so many customers last year that were coming over and when we explained that the accessibility of the island is brilliant. It works really well for us and really well for the people that came over, and it stopped people using their cars, which is what we’re being asked to do.
‘The buses on the Island are brilliant and the transport here means it is really easy to get around.
‘I think the Green Star scheme is good for us as a business. It helps us to promote our business, as well as the Green Star scheme and it all works well together.’
Nicola Rogers, Visitor Travel Project Manager, said:
‘The event was a huge success and I’m pleased to say that 32 businesses signed up to the new Green Star scheme. The majority of businesses reached at least silver status that shows us that there is already a lot of support for the cause across the Island. ‘We are hugely grateful to everyone who came along to show their interest and commitment to the scheme. If anyone was unable to attend but would like to find out more they are more than welcome to contact me for details.’
